Monitoring Battery Voltage Over the Internet

Measuring battery voltage at remote repeater sites is increasingly important for reducing unplanned downtime.

It was a cold dark night in october when the phone began to ring off the hook; A quick glance at the leadISP network portal indicated that about 90 wireless subscribers were without service and one tower down.

After updating the system status on our phone system I attempted to make contact with the property owner that hosted the site.. no answer.. after waiting around for about an hour I decided to drive out and see about what I could do.

Arriving at the site late at night I knocked on the door of the home-owner.. No Answer… and again no answer…  Was I waking them up? After about a minute I decided to grab the ladder and climb up to the roof and inspect the repeater box.  I slowly tiptoed across the roof with visions of police rushing in the driveway or the home-owner returning to find someone on there roof..  What would I ever say?

At the Box there was no line power coming in and the battery was stone dead, likely ruined.

After going back to our warehouse, getting a new battery and installing it I was disappointed to discover that the Ubiquiti Air Fiber would not turn on, the slow painful brownout had fried it completely and a quick sniff confirmed that the blue smoke had in fact been released.

Another trip to the warehouse, a new radio installed, 500′ of extension cord to the nearest neighbour and things were finally going again at the site, besides the burnt airfiber it burnt into me forever the importance of monitoring the battery voltage at all of my sites and the need for brownout protection.

With the Flexs Q3 I have an easy way to control all the loads at my sites, monitor solar, wind and line power as-well as setting up simple logic to turn loads off at different voltage thresholds.

The Flexs Q3 gives you everything you need to monitor voltage at your home solar energy system, remote repeater site or anywhere you have voltages that need to be measured remotely.

With Eight ultra high resolution analog inputs capable of measuring 60V (AC or DC) at 0.007mV precision or up to 1KV (AC or DC) at 0.0003V precision the Flexs Q3 gives you everything you need to start monitoring, logging and displaying your remote site voltages over the internet.

With Differential inputs you can also measure individual battery voltages in a large bank which allows you to monitor battery bank balance and individual battery performance. a must have for large series banks!
